International Literacy Association Choices Reading List

Children’s Choices
Since 1974, Children’s Choices have been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents—and children themselves. IRA and the Children’s Book Council cosponsor the project.

Young Adult Choices
Since 1987, the Young Adults’ Choices project has developed an annual list of new books that will encourage adolescents to read. The books are selected by the readers themselves, so they are bound to be popular with middle and secondary school students. The reading list is a trusted source of book recommendations, used by adolescents, their parents, teachers, and librarians.

Teachers’ Choices
Since 1989, the Teachers’ Choices project has developed an annual annotated reading list of new books that will encourage young people to read. These are books that kids will enjoy—and that contribute to learning across the curriculum.

Newbery Medal and Honor Books

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Caldecott Medal and Honor Books

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Capitol Choices

Noteworthy books for children and teens. Capitol Choices has included librarians, teachers, booksellers, children’s literature specialists, reviewers, and magazine editors who work in cities, suburbs, and rural areas in and around Washington, D.C. Since 1996, they have been meeting, discussing, and selecting recommended books for young people through the high school years.

FunBrain
Since 1997, kids, teachers, librarians, and parents have enthusiastically turned to FunBrain for its free educational games, online books, and comics. FunBrain, created for kids age preschool through grade 8, offers more than 100 fun, interactive games that develop skills in math, reading, and literacy. Plus, kids can read a variety of popular books and comics on the site, including Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amelia Writes Again, and Brewster Rocket.

Reading Process – Wikipedia Definition

Arlington STEM Volunteer Program

The Arlington STEM Volunteer Program aims to foster STEM literacy for all students and help prepare students for futures in STEM careers.  An affiliate of the AAAS/SSE STEM Volunteer Program, program professionals commit to volunteering in a school throughout the school year to assist K-12 STEM teachers in their classrooms.  Our volunteers work with the classroom teachers to develop activities that utilize their unique skills and qualifications. The Arlington STEM Volunteer Program offers a unique opportunity for both students and volunteers alike.

Third-Grade Science Alternative Assessments

As a result of HB 930, the third-grade science SOL test was eliminated, effective with the 2014-15 school year and has been replaced with district-developed alternative assessments.

  • History Alive!/Social Studies Alive! This link brings you to the home page of Teachers’ Curriculum Institute. The site provides information about all the History Alive! and Social Studies Alive! programs, allows teachers to share tips with each other, preview activities, and access Internet tutorials, enrichment essays, and enrichment activities for selected programs.
  • Primary Source Learning This links to a project funded by the Library of Congress to support the use of primary sources in the classroom. In addition to access to primary sources, there are numerous strategy ideas as well as lessons developed by Arlington teachers using primary sources. Additionally, teachers can access this link (http://tpsnva.org/posters/) at the site to locate posters that align with SOL objectives and enduring understandings for all social studies subjects.
  • Everyday Civics Civics education in Virginia emphasizes the importance of citizen involvement in all levels of government and promotes the study of state and local government among the Commonwealth’s citizens. This Web site will enhance teachers’ content knowledge and support the development of instructional strategies for teaching civics in k-12 history and social science classrooms. Ready resources for the classroom include lesson plans, discussion boards, primary documents, Internet links, and media.
  • Virginia’s Site for Social Studies Educators This website is intended to be a Teacher Resource Guide for Virginia’s teachers to develop knowledge and skills in history, geography, civics and economics to prepare students for informed participation in shaping the nation’s future.
  • Documents of American History State law requires that the Documents of American History shall be taught to all students in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This file includes the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the Constitution of Virginia, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution.
  • National Council for the Social Studies NCSS site contains teaching resources, information on awards and grants programs, and an executive summary of the NCSS Curriculum Standards for Social Studies. Included is a list of links that are categorized by the 10 thematic strands of the Standards.
  • The Virginia Council for Social Studies engages and supports Virginia educators in advocating and strengthening social studies. Goals include fostering professional growth, developing communication, and promoting the teaching of social studies. Information about the annual Virginia Conference for Social Studies Educators can be found here.

  • http://www.kids.gov– This site provides a portal for K-8 students to access information about the United States government. Students link to different categories to find out about all the government sites available for their use. Students can learn about contests and play review games also.
  • http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com– From ancient world to the present, this site tells the story of history from the people who lived it. Included are journal entries, audio clips, videos, and pictures that allow students a glimpse of the people that experienced big events in history and recorded information about these events.
  • http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/– This free resource from the Library of Congress provides access to teachers of thousands of audio clips and songs throughout American history.
  • http://www.nps.gov/learn/trunks.htm– The National Park Service offers a variety of traveling trunks containing historical evidence for a nominal fee.
