Advanced Placement (AP)

Arlington Public Schools offers Advanced Placement (AP) exams during the College Board’s exam window each year.

AP Exams Overview

  • Students taking an AP exam will test in person at their school.
  • Students need a College Board account to register for AP exams.
  • Students register for AP exams through their AP course using an exam code provided by their teacher in the online portal, MyAP.

What is changing for 2025-2026?

Starting during the 2025-2026 school year, APS will cover the cost of up to three AP exams per student, per year, for students enrolled in the corresponding AP courses.

What happens if a student takes more than three AP courses?

Students who take more than three AP courses and wish to take additional exams will be responsible for the cost of those exams, including any late or unused exam fees.

Is this different from the 2024-2025 school year APS practice?

Yes — this is a change. APS previously paid for the cost of  all AP exams and now only three exams will be paid for annually.

Are there any related costs for students taking three AP exams paid for by APS?

Yes. Students would be responsible for late-registration fees.

Who else pays for exam fees?

  • Students not enrolled in the AP course
  • Students in Home Instruction

Do students still need to take the AP exam to earn the quality point?

No. Students earn the additional quality point by successfully completing the AP course — taking the exam is no longer required.

Should students still take the AP exam(s)?

Yes! We strongly encourage students to take the exam(s). AP exams offer the opportunity to:

– Demonstrate mastery of college-level material
– Earn potential college credit
– Strengthen college applications

What is the AP exam schedule?

The 2026 AP Exams will take place in May over two weeks:
May 4–8 and May 11–15

AP coordinators will communicate specific times and locations for the exams.
