Notes: Fine Arts Exceptions: Schools performing special events that occur on holidays or holiday weekends. Examples of these events include holiday parades, bowl games and other performances associated with special performance opportunities and field trips for students.
Winter and Spring Break Special Exception Rule: APS varsity athletic teams may participate in tournaments and invitationals through the entirety of winter and spring break week with the exception of Sundays. These breaks are full staff holidays, therefore whenever possible facility use should be limited.

Secondary Athletic Coaching Vacancies

- Assistant Junior Varsity Softball CoachThe JV assistant softball coach will operate as part of a larger overall softball coaching staff and assist in the development of 8th-10th graders. Ability to work cooperatively with the head coach, motivate students to challenge themselves physically, while developing student social emotional skills is required. Practices are typically held from 3:30-5:15 pm Monday-Friday with games two nights a week at 6:30 pm. The softball season runs from February 23 until mid-May. The stipend for this position will be determined based on time commitment and availability with a range of $800-1250.
- Assistant Girls Tennis Coach The assistant varsity girls tennis coach will work with the head coach to lead a 15-20 person team. Duties include administrative, practice planning and implementation, development of the competitive ladder, team building and match play. Candidates should have a focus on creating a team environment where individual skill development, while important, is secondary to developing social emotional skills. The tennis season runs from late February to late May with matches 2-3 days a week at 4:30 pm and practices between school dismissal at 3:30 pm and daylight ending. A stipend of $2416 is available based on time commitment and availability.
- Assistant Girls Lacrosse Coach The assistant varsity girls lacrosse coach will work with the team of coaches to provide the best experience for all 40 plus girls lacrosse players. This individual will primarily assist with junior varsity. The girls lacrosse season runs mid-February through the end of May. Practices are at 3:30 pm twice a week and 5 pm on other weekday evenings. JV does not typically practice on Saturdays. Games are at 6 pm one to two nights a week. A stipend of $1500-$2000 is available based on time commitment and availability.
- Assistant Track Coach – Jumps CoachSeeking a jumps coach (specifically high jump and triple jump) to be a member of a staff of five or six coaches who work with over 150 athletes of varying abilities and interests. Candidates should be able to commit to afternoon practices four weekdays a week as well as meets on Friday nights and/or Saturdays. The ideal candidate has experience working with high school age students and can plan practices for a group of 20-25 students. An eye toward safety of the runners is a key concern given the location of practices. The outdoor track season runs from mid-February to late May . The stipend will range depending on time commitment and availability from $2232-$4467.
- Junior Varsity Cheer Coach As part of the overall cheerleading coaching staff, this individual will oversee the development of the less experienced students. Safety, fun and structure must be paramount and the successful candidate will bring prior cheer experience either as a coach or student-athlete. Additional safety training is available. The winter cheer season is primarily sideline at games with limited practice opportunities. Games are typically at 5:45 pm with arrival at 5 pm two to three days a week. The stipend for this position will be prorated based on time commitment and availability. This position is for current winter season or next fall.

- Assistant Field Hockey Coach: The Candidate will assist in developing athletes’ skills, fostering teamwork, and executing game plans. Wakefield’s field hockey program has shown steady growth in recent years, gaining competitiveness at the district level while fostering a positive and encouraging environment for student-athletes. The assistant coach will help lead practices, support players during games, and contribute to the overall success of the program. Previous coaching or playing experience is preferred, along with the ability to provide strong leadership and mentorship. The Field Hockey season runs from August to November with daily practices from 3:30pm -5:30pm, Monday through Friday. The Stipend for this position is up to $5600.00
- Varsity Boys Head Lacrosse Coach: The head varsity boys lacrosse coach will provide vision for the JV and V lacrosse teams which typically consist of 40-60 students. The coaching staff is budgeted $16,799 for allocation of employees typically including three assistant coaches. The stipend for the varsity head coach position is up to $6676 for the season. The ability to evaluate student strengths, formulate strategies to best utilize the skill of team members and model respect on the field is imperative. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the educational component of high school athletics and the ability to use high school lacrosse to help students develop socially and emotionally. Additionally, a focus on skill development through winter skill sessions and daily spring practices is expected. Candidates should have prior high school coaching experience (substitutions for high-level travel) and playing experience. The season runs from mid-February to late May with daily practices Monday-Friday from 3:30-5:15 or 5:30-7:30pm. Football, Varsity Head Coach
Roles and Responsibilities
- To assist in maintaining high academic standards for all student athletes.
- To assist the director of student activities and principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches.
- To direct, supervise, and evaluate regularly the performance of all assistant coaches of the respective sport.
- To work cooperatively with the athletic director to assure proper insurance coverage for all athletes.
- To work cooperatively with other head athletic coaches in order to operate a well balanced athletic program.
- To foster among the participants and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to win, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community.
- To direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the varsity athletic team and to lead, supervise, and assist the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them.
- To act as a positive influence upon the behavior of members of his/her athletic staff and teams.
- To be present and personally direct the team at all varsity contests and to be present at as many junior varsity and freshmen contests as possible. He/she will also be responsible for the supervision of his/her athletes at invitational meets or postseason competition.
- To advise the director of student activities as to the preparation of schedules for his/her respective sport.
- To advise the director of student activities in the selection and performance evaluations of officials.
- To recommend to the director of student activities the type and amount of equipment and supplies needed to conduct the sports program. To provide for the inventory and care of equipment.
- To advise the director of student activities of the condition of athletic facilities and needs for their preparation and maintenance.
- To assist the director of student activities to ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained under rules of the VHSL.
- To recommend to the director of student activities and/or principal the removal of athletes from the team(s) when training or eligibility regulations have not been met.
- To ensure that all athletes have undergone and passed medical examinations before the regular practice season begins per VHSL guidelines.
- To organize a system for encouraging students to try out for his/her team and to develop and recruit equipment manager(s), score keepers, statisticians, ball runners, etc. for all teams.
- To collect and keep on file records, statistics, news items, and photographs for the athletic teams under his/her supervision.
- To recommend to the director of student activities those students who qualify for a varsity letter or junior varsity/freshman certificate.
- To recommend to the director of student activities, upon request, prospective coaches.
- To observe sub varsity practices and games.
- To perform other duties related to the position of head athletic coach as requested by the high school principal and/or director of student activities .
Qualifications
- Coaching experience or participation in the sport which you are applying for on high school or college levels.
- Completion of CPR and First Aid training or enrollment in current CPR and First Aid training course.
- Prefer experience as a teacher or classified employee in a Public School setting
Date Range: August – December.
Salary: Stipend – $9,007
