APS hires enthusiastic and dedicated substitutes to provide instructional support when teachers and assistants are absent.

New Applicants

APS is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated applicants to provide instructional support to ensure adequate coverage within the schools when teachers and assistants are absent due to personal, sick, and professional development leave.

How to Apply

Required Documentation For Substitute Teacher Positions

  1. Copy of Official/Unofficial College Transcripts (minimum 30 credits)
    *If an individual has obtained a diploma and/or college/university degree outside of the USA, an evaluation must be completed by one of these agencies

    1. National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is an association of 19 credential evaluation services with admission standards and an enforced code of good practice.
    2. Association of International Credentials Evaluators (AICE) is an association of 10 credential evaluation services with a board of advisors and an enforced code of ethics.
  2. Recommended Two letters of Recommendation/Reference (professional or personal letter)
  3. The most current copy of your resume

Required Documentation For Substitute Assistant Positions

  1. High school diploma or college transcript under 30 credits

Onboarding Process

  1. Submit Application

  3. If offered a position, Onboarding (background check, new hire paperwork)
  4. Orientation

Current Substitutes

At APS we know substitute teachers are crucial in creating a successful learning environment for our students. Our dedicated substitutes provide instructional support to ensure coverage within the schools when teachers and assistants are absent.

  • Substitutes must work 22 days in a school year. 11 from the 1​st​ day of school – Jan 31st. Another 11 days from Feb 1​st​ – the last day of school
  • Substitute assistants can only work assistant jobs
  • *To move from Substitute assistant to Substitute teacher please email transcripts showing completed 30 credits to: [email protected]

Long-Term and School-Based Sub Positions

Substitute Incentive Program

  1. For 50 assignments worked = Bronze Star
  2. For 75 assignments worked = Silver Star & Printed APS official badge
  3. For 100 assignments worked = Gold Star & Printed APS official badge

*An APS sub lanyard and tag must be worn during the substitute job

 


 

Long-Term Substitutes

Long-term substitutes provide instructional support to ensure coverage when teachers and assistants are absent for extended periods.

  • Only substitute teachers can do long-term assignments. Assistants are not eligible for long-term positions.
  • Long-term substitutes receive APS access via email. If you are having APS access issues, please contact ​[email protected]​ or 703-228-2847
  • Long-term substitutes must complete their entire term before subbing for other jobs and long-term assignments are not permitted to be more than 90 days per the VDOE guidelines.

Long-Term Substitute Pay

Long term Substitute Teacher pay is:

  • $22.72 (Days 1-10)
  • $30.98 (Days 11 – end of assignment)
  • Sub Teachers that work less than half a day are paid for a minimum of 4.25 hours
  • Sub assistants are paid for any hours worked with no half-day adjustment

 


 

Retired Teachers

APS knows retired teachers are a valuable resource and have the experience and skill set to make for a successful substitute teacher. Follow the steps below to transfer from retired to substitute teacher.

Complete Your Application Here

  1. Click add a substitute application to your profile
  2. When your application is complete please email [email protected]
  3. You will need to do new tax forms and direct deposit
  4. Once processed you will be invited to the next substitute orientation

Additional Applicant Information

  1. You must have a 30-day break of service from your last day worked
    1. Summer is not included in 30-day break; For example, if you retire in June, you will be eligible to begin subbing in October.
  2. Please be advised, if you are collecting retirement, you are only allowed to work 30 hours a week.
