APS Responds to U.S. Department of Education

Dear APS Staff and Families,

As students and staff prepare to return back to school, we wanted to provide an update about our transgender student policy related to the ongoing conversations between APS, the U.S. Department of Education and other school divisions in our area.

Today, we responded to the U.S. Department of Education’s request to amend our Transgender Students in Schools policy.

We believe federal and state laws require us to uphold our current policy. In responding to the U.S. Department of Education, we have noted that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments this year and make a decision whether Title IX restricts or protects access to facilities based on gender identity. Until then, we will comply with current laws with respect to Title IX, including the Virginia Values Act.

Arlington Public Schools will continue to foster an inclusive community for all, including students and staff who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community.  We are proud that our core values include excellence, equity, and inclusion.

APS is committed to creating policies that ensure all students can learn in an inclusive environment that is safe, supportive and free from all forms of discrimination.

We will provide an update on this matter once available.

Thank you,

Dr. Francisco Durán
Superintendent, Arlington Public Schools

Bethany Zecher Sutton
Board Chair, Arlington Public Schools
