Students Send Science Project to Space
On Aug. 24, 5,000 lbs. of cargo were sent to the International Space Station aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Included in that cargo was an experiment created by Yorktown senior Ryan Sullivan, Arlington Tech freshman Asher Greene, and Washington-Liberty freshman Grayson Talbot.
The project, developed with the Higher Orbits Program, is focused on the behavior of yellow slime mold — Physarum polycephalum — in a zero-gravity environment. The slime, known for its unique ability to find the most efficient pathway, was put in a 3D maze to help scientists and medical researchers determine applications for cancer treatment distribution.
This team was part of the “Go For Launch!” event in 2024, which was made possible through Higher Orbits’ partnership with Kuiper Government Solutions.
