Extended Day Special Sessions

For the 2025-26 school year, Arlington Public Schools, in conjunction with the Extended Day Program, is piloting full-day Extended Day services during Winter Break (select days only) and Spring Break.

Program Information

  • Students will engage in games, activities, arts, sciences, indoor, and outdoor experiences.
  • We request that students be dropped off between 8am and 9am daily to encourage their participation in activities.
  • A snack will be provided around 9am and 3pm daily.
  • Each student must bring a lunch from home each day.  The ability to heat or refrigerate items brought from home will not be available.
    Lunch will be scheduled from 12:00pm – 12:30pm each day.
  • Students not enrolled in the optional Extended Hours session must be signed out by an authorized individual by 4PM.
    Students enrolled in the optional Extended Hours session must be signed out by an authorized individual by 6PM.
  • All individuals signing out a student must present a photo ID.
  • In the event of an emergency closing, information will be announced through the APS website, local television news, social media, Parent Square, and DayCare Works communications.

Eligibility

  • The student must be currently enrolled in Extended Day.
  • Students must be in grades Pre-Kindergarten – 5th grade, or enrolled in the Shriver Program.
  • Your Extended Day family account may not have a past due balance.
  • To be eligible for the optional Special Session Extended Hours, students must also be enrolled in Special Session Core Program Hours.
  • Students may only register to attend Special Sessions at the location assigned based on their school year Extended Day attendance building.

    Building locations may be different for each Special Session.

Hours of Operation

Core Program Hours – 8AM – 4PM

  • We request that students be dropped off between 8am and 9am daily to encourage their participation in activities.

Optional Extended Hours (additional fee) – 4PM – 6PM
*To be enrolled in Extended Hours, the student must also be enrolled in Core Program Hours.

  • Students must be picked up by 4pm, if they are only enrolled in the Core Program Hours.
  • Students who are enrolled in the Extended Hours session must be picked up by 6 pm.
  • Failure to pick up on time may result in the termination of Special Session services.

Registration and Enrollment

Registration is online through your Extended Day family account.

SPRING BREAK REGISTRATION

  • Registration Opens:  8am on Tuesday, January 20, 2026
    Registration Closes:  12pm on Friday, February 6, 2026 (UPDATED)
    Payment:  Due by 12pm on Friday, March 6, 2026
  • Families will be notified by email if their student is enrolled, if additional information is requested, or if the student was not enrolled due to lottery results.
  • A lottery will be conducted for Special Session Camp locations where registrations received by 12pm on February 3 exceeds 150 students.
  • After registration closes at 12pm on February 6, 2026, registration requests will not be accepted and a wait list will not be maintained.
  • Enrollment notification will begin by Monday, February 9, 2026.
  • If enrollment does not exceed 45 students at a location, services may be moved to another Special Sessions building location.

 

Fees

  • Fees are charged for all days of the session.
  • Fees will not be adjusted based on attendance.
  • Fees will not be offered on a sliding scale based on household income.
  • Families may submit a request for a fee reduction based on financial hardship. Documentation must be provided, to include, but not limited to: pay stubs, salary verification letter, medical disability letter, Reduction in Force letter, SNAP verification, WIC verification, Free and Reduced Lunch verification, and Housing Grant verification.
  • All fees are non-refundable.
  • Fees will be charged/posted to your family account once the student is enrolled.
  • Fees are due:
    • For Spring Break Sessions – by 12pm on Friday, March 6, 2026

Medication Management

To dispense medication and manage health matters, on the first day of the Special Session, parents/guardians must provide the following to the Special Sessions supervisory team:

  • A copy of the current doctor’s order obtained from the student’s doctor or home school clinic
  • Medication in its original labeled container

At the end of the Special Session camp, the remaining medication must be signed out by an authorized adult.
