APS Musicians Earn Top Honors Across Virginia

Five students earn spots in the 2025 Northeast Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra

  • Five APS students (pictured above) were selected to the 2025 Northeast Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra following competitive auditions with students from across Arlington, Fairfax, private schools and home schools.
  • They performed under the direction of Joel Schut on Nov. 15 at Westfield High School.
  • The students selected include Ellie Earle and Ellsie Seward from Washington-Liberty, Tessa Green and Alexander Joe from Yorktown and Josephine Van Hoey from Wakefield.

Two APS Musicians Named to All-Virginia Jazz Ensemble

  • Yorktown senior guitarist Silas Frickert and Washington-Liberty senior trumpeter Nicholas Young were selected for the 2025 All-Virginia Jazz Ensemble and earned the top scores in the state on their respective instruments.
  • They rehearsed and performed with top musicians from across Virginia in Norfolk during the annual VMEA conference.
  • The ensemble was conducted by acclaimed jazz trombonist and clinician Wycliffe Gordon.

Three students to perform at statewide conference following rigorous auditions

  • Three students from APS earned placement in the 2025-26 VMEA Senior Honor Choir after a highly competitive audition process with vocalists across Virginia.
  • They will perform Nov. 22 at the VMEA Conference and rehearse with guest conductor Kristina MacMullen from Baylor University.
  • Honorees include Matthew Heim and Liem Nguyen from Washington-Liberty and Ella Onur from Yorktown.

Yorktown Chamber Orchestra Takes the Stage at VMEA Conference

  • The Yorktown Chamber Orchestra was selected as one of just two high school orchestras in Virginia invited to perform at the VMEA Conference in Norfolk Nov. 20-22.
  • Under the direction of Laura Wallace, students will perform works by Mozart, Manuel de Falla and Frank Proto, including A Carmen Fantasy featuring a senior string bass soloist.
  • The program will also include a premiere work by composer Doug Wallace.
