The Barcroft Elementary School community celebrated its 100th anniversary on Fri, Sep. 19.
In 1906, Barcroft began with one teacher and 10 students in a local living room, and expanded to the still-standing one-room schoolhouse at 800 S. Buchanan St. in 1908. When the Barcroft School and Civic League successfully opened the current school building on Sept. 19, 1925, there were just 65 students. Barcroft is the oldest continuously located elementary school in Arlington.
Barcroft Elementary School students, families and staff celebrated the school’s 100th anniversary by creating a human chain, measuring the distance from the original Barcroft schoolhouse to its current location. In addition to the human chain, Friday’s celebration included:
- A visit from the Wakefield High School Drum Line and Flag Team
- A visit from the Arlington Historical Society
- A special assembly
- Antique Cars
- Fun games and activities from 100 years ago
- A community picnic in the evening
- Creating a new time capsule that will be opened in 25 years.
Congratulations, Barcroft Eagles!
