Community Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Historic John M. Langston School

Educational Legacy of Halls Hill’s Rosenwald School to be Honored at Centennial Commemoration

ARLINGTON, VA – The John M. Langston Citizens Association (JMLCA) and Arlington Public Schools (APS) invite the community to join a special centennial celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the John M. Langston School, which opened its doors on November 7, 1925.

The commemorative program will take place on Saturday, September 27, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Columbus Club of Arlington, located at 5115 Little Falls Road, Arlington, VA 22207. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Amazon and VHC-Health there is no charge to attend the event, however tickets/registration via Eventbrite is required for entry.

The John M. Langston School served as a cornerstone of education for elementary-age children in the segregated Halls Hill neighborhood for four decades. As one of the historic Rosenwald Schools—built through the partnership of the Julius Rosenwald Foundation, local government, and community contributions—Langston School represented hope, progress, and the unwavering commitment to education during an era of institutional segregation in the South.

“This celebration honors not just a building, but a community’s dedication to learning and growth despite the challenges of segregation,” said Wilma Jones, President of the JMLCA. “The John M. Langston School was more than an educational institution—it was the heart of Halls Hill, where generations of children learned, celebrated, and built lasting bonds.”

The afternoon program will feature speakers sharing the rich history and lasting impact of the school, named after the distinguished abolitionist, attorney, educator, and first dean of Howard University Law School. The event will highlight the school’s role in the Halls Hill community, including beloved traditions like the annual May Day celebrations that brought the entire neighborhood together.

Following the commemoration program, attendees will enjoy dinner as part of the celebration. The event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Amazon and the Virginia Hospital Center, whose support enables the community to properly honor this important milestone in Arlington’s educational history.

The John M. Langston School operated until 1966, serving as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the transformative impact of education. Though the original building no longer stands, its legacy continues to inspire and unite the Halls Hill community and beyond. Community members, former students, educators, and all those interested in Arlington’s rich educational history are encouraged to attend this meaningful centennial celebration.
