Superintendent’s Aug. 30, 2023 Update

Dear APS Families,

We’re back! We are off to a great start and are so happy to welcome our students. We are grateful for your partnership and thank you for entrusting us with the education of your students.

As I visited schools this week, it was a joy to see students back with their friends and teachers, and to observe a variety of community-building activities to create safe, supportive learning environments for all. I look forward to visiting all schools during the first month of school and sharing the highlights with you.

Look at photo highlights from the first day and watch this short clip of our first-day video. The full version premieres Sept. 7 at the School Board meeting.  As we start the year, we need your help in ensuring all students attend school regularly. Our focus is providing every student with an equal opportunity to reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. Regular school attendance is essential to student achievement.

Remember that:

  • Students can be chronically absent by missing just over two days each month.
  • Students who attend school are more likely to perform well in class and graduate.
  • You can help by ensuring your student attends school every day unless they are sicklimiting family trips to days school is not in session and communicating with the school if there are any concerns.

I also want to thank you for staying engaged. One of our priorities this school year is strengthening family engagement and connecting in new ways. Our new communications platform, ParentSquare, is one tool we are using to stay better connected. Families can receive messages from APS, your student’s school and teacher in one platform, in your preferred language. Learn more.

Have a wonderful long weekend! APS is closed on Friday and Monday for Labor Day. View the school year calendar.

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
Superintendent
