School and Facility Planning

School and facility planning is a comprehensive approach aimed at creating a better future for students, staff, and the community. This planning is guided by three core principles:

  • Enrollment Management,
  • Short- and Long-Term Facility Assessments, and
  • Stakeholder Engagement.

The planning team works collaboratively across all Arlington Public Schools (APS) departments and offices and partners with various Arlington County Government offices to ensure a coordinated and inclusive approach. As of April 2024, the responsibilities for school and facility planning were reorganized to the Department of Facilities & Operations.

Below is a list of datasets, reports, and plans developed by the planning team:

Program Capacity

Program capacity identifies how current spaces are used during a school year to meet core and specific educational program needs. APS believes a school’s program capacity provides a more accurate and real-time view of capacity utilization and seat availability and shows how a school’s general and specific educational programs impact capacity. Through this lens, APS can develop a more systematic process for program placement that does not create capacity challenges at schools.
