On December, 14, 2023, the School Board approved the school year calendar for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. The school year calendars adhere to the parameters in School Board Policy I-4.30 School Year Calendar that was adopted on September 7, 2023, which occurred before the start of the development process for these school year calendars.
As required by the policy, the school year calendar will be developed during the school year that begins two years prior. Since this is the first year of the policy being in effect, two school year calendars will be developed together, with the first being done during the school year that begins one year prior. This planning process for the development of the school year calendar provides students, staff, and families with time to plan for important dates, holidays, and breaks.
The School Year Policy set the following parameters for all future school year calendars:
- 180 instructional days every school year
- A school start date one week before Labor Day
- Winter Break will incorporate Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day and will be scheduled in conjunction with neighboring school divisions to ensure alignment with their calendars
- Spring Break will be one week long and will be scheduled in conjunction with neighboring school divisions to ensure alignment with their calendars
- The last day of school scheduled before Juneteenth, which is celebrated on June 19 every year
- Celebration of the diverse religious holidays APS has honored in recent years
Since these parameters ensure consistency in the school year calendar development process from year to year, the calendar committee was limited in the scope of items that were able to be adjusted on the calendar, which includes the following:
- Early Release Days
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
- Professional Learning Opportunities
- Marking Periods
- Staff Pre-Service Days
