Message from APS Leadership on Israel and Gaza

Dear APS Community,

Since the horrifying Hamas attack on Israel, we have all continued to witness the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza, as well as the pain it is causing in our schools and community. As the leaders of Arlington Public Schools, we sympathize with innocent victims and know that many APS students, staff and families are grieving right now. We also know that there are no words that can ease the trauma and loss they are experiencing.

Over the past several weeks, we have been working to deepen our understanding of the crisis and how it is affecting our schools and community. We are meeting with various student groups, as well as with Jewish, Palestinian and Muslim families and leaders in our community. In the coming weeks, we will hold a community forum to have a facilitated dialogue and offer another space for us to come together, hear one another, and learn from each other. More details will be shared soon.

At school, we are seeing different expressions of the grief, fear, and uncertainty many are facing, whether they are Jewish, Palestinian, Muslim, or anyone with ties to the region. We extend our deepest care and concern to each of you at this challenging time, and reaffirm our commitment to providing safe, welcoming spaces for all to learn and grow together.

As a school system with deeply held beliefs in diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect, we wholeheartedly condemn violence and do not tolerate acts of hate, bullying or discrimination of any kind. We believe that by nurturing an atmosphere of compassion and acceptance within our schools, we can help create a more peaceful future.

As educators, it is our responsibility to provide safe spaces where students can express themselves authentically and feel comforted and cared for, regardless of their background or beliefs. We have provided resources to assist our teachers and staff, as they play an essential role in educating students, making space for dialogue and understanding. These are incredibly difficult conversations, and we are continuing to refine our resources and share guidance.  Our staff have our full support as they create safe spaces for students and lead conversations that help let our students know that they are valued and loved.

Regarding student-led protests and walkouts, we want to clarify that these activities are not organized or endorsed by APS. Our policy allows students an excused absence for civic engagement activities, but any participation in such events must be conducted respectfully, without causing disruption or harm to others and in a manner that is considerate of the diverse perspectives within our community.

Please continue to support one another, be mindful of the trauma many are experiencing, and report any acts of antisemitism, islamophobia, or any other form of hate or discrimination that you see to a trusted member of our staff or by completing the APS threat-assessment anonymous reporting form.

Sincerely,

Cristina Diaz-Torres
