Dear APS Families,
Last week, I joined the School Board to honor employees who have dedicated 25, 30 and 35 years of service to APS. It was an honor to celebrate our dedicated staff. Here is a list of the 2024 Service Award recipients—join us in thanking them for all they do!
I also want to provide an update on our participation in the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) ALL-In Tutoring program. Tutoring at elementary and middle schools began in January and will run through late April, as a supplement to the other individual support students receive in the classroom.
Here is a brief update on the program, along with other reminders.
- ALL-In Tutoring Update: Nearly 7,500 students in grades 3-8 were identified to receive tutoring based on statewide assessments and VDOE guidance.
- Students are receiving tutoring support through a variety of models, including both during the school day or before/after school 2-3 times a week.
- There are 393 students who have engaged in 1,193 tutoring sessions with our virtual high impact tutoring vendor.
- Tutors are focused on teaching current grade-level standards while addressing any prior grade level gaps. This research-based approach is often referred to as “learning acceleration.”
- If you have any questions about ALL-in Tutoring or the support your student is receiving, contact Caroline McAleer, Learning Acceleration Coordinator at mcaleer@apsva.us.
- Schools Celebrate Kindness Week: This week, schools are celebrating Valentine’s Day and Kindness Week with day-to-day acts of kindness to create kinder, safer, and more inclusive learning environments. School counselors are leading student activities across the division from spirit days to kindness challenges.
- Black History Month: In honor of Black History Month, next week we will recognize African American student leaders awarded by each high school, nominated by their school principals. There will be a special recognition at the Feb. 22 School Board meeting along with a student performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing.
As a reminder, Mon, Feb. 19, APS is closed for the Presidents Day holiday.
Enjoy the long weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. Francisco Durán
Superintendent
