Superintendent’s Jan. 24, 2024 Update

Dear APS Families,

Thank you to the APS custodians, grounds and maintenance crews, and transportation staff who worked throughout last week’s snow to clear our sidewalks and parking lots. We appreciate all they do throughout the year and especially during winter weather. I also want to thank the families who joined us on Monday for the Community Information Night on creating safe learning environments and addressing bullying, harassment or discrimination. If you were unable to attend, the recorded session is available. We look forward to continuing to engage with students, families and staff on opportunities to strengthen student safety and well-being.

The following is an important update for secondary students with respect to grading and test retakes, that goes into effect in the third marking period:

Update to Secondary Grading Policy Implementation Procedure (PIP): Throughout the fall, we met with administrators, teachers and staff at our secondary schools and programs to gather feedback on the revised grading procedures approved in June 2023. Based on their input, the following changes will take effect Jan. 30, the start of the third marking period:

  • A student who scores below 80 percent must be afforded the opportunity to retake or revise a summative assessment after remediation. The teacher shall determine the type and timeframe of remediation and implementation of the retake or revision. Only the higher score, up to 80 percent, on the summative assessment from the original or the retake or revision, will be used to calculate the student’s grade.

For context, retakes and revisions provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency. In the APS grade descriptors, students scoring 80 or above have demonstrated consistent knowledge of content or skills. More details regarding these changes will be provided in the revised PIP that will be posted next week.

As a reminder, Mon, Jan. 29 is a Grade Preparation Day, so there is no school for students. Because it is a non-student day, please be mindful that most school staff will be working remotely, and the Welcome Center as well as school front offices will be closed.

Thank you for your partnership in our students’ success!

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
Superintendent
