Superintendent’s January 10, 2024 Update

Dear APS Families,

As part of our commitment to the academic success and well-being of our students, I want to ensure families are aware of additional tutoring being offered in the coming weeks, and the Jan. 22 Community Information Night on student safety and well-being.

All-In Tutoring Update: As part of the Virginia Dept. of Education’s All-In Tutoring initiative, APS will provide additional tutoring support for identified students in grades 3-8 who meet specific criteria in reading and/or math. This supplements the ongoing interventions and support provided by our teachers and staff on an ongoing basis to provide high-quality instruction and extra, targeted assistance to every student.

Our elementary and middle schools have communicated with the families of eligible students, and tutoring sessions will begin in mid to late January. Tutors will work with students who need extra support in reading and/or math to reach grade-level goals through a variety of models, including:

  • In-person during the school day through small group support;
  • Before or after school with hired tutors and volunteers;
  • Virtually through a high-dosage tutoring vendor.

If you have questions about your student’s tutoring support or eligibility, please contact your school’s administrator.

Community Information Night—Leading Safe, Inclusive Learning Environments: APS will host an event Mon, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at Wakefield High School to educate our families and the broader community about how we work to provide positive, safe school climates. We will also discuss current procedures for preventing and addressing bullying, harassment or discrimination. During this event, we will highlight some of the different challenges faced, proactive measures being taken and opportunities to improve and strengthen our efforts.

This is the first of a variety of opportunities for families to learn more and engage with APS leaders on these important topics. Learn more and register.

I wish you a wonderful long weekend as we recognize the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday.

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Durán
Superintendent
