When is assistive technology considered for a student with a disability?
In 2004, Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) required that assistive technology be considered at every child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting. A student’s educational needs, not his/her disability, determines whether or not assistive technologies are appropriate for him/her.
If a referral is made to the AsTech Team, how long will it take for the assessment to be completed?
The AsTech Team has a timeline of 60 business days to complete an assessment.
As a parent/guardian, how do I find out what assistive technology was recommended for my child?
A copy of the SETT Framework is sent home to the parent/guardian via the student’s case carrier. The IEP team will reconvene to discuss recommendations and consider any modifications that need to be made to the IEP (e.g. a change in goals, accommodations, etc.).
If a device is recommended for a child, will someone be available to teach the student, teachers, and family how to use it?
Yes. Trainings are offered by the AsTech Team members and all members of the IEP team are invited and encouraged to participate. Trainings may be held at the schools attended by the students who use the technology or virtually via Teams.
Families of students receiving a communication device are offered a Family Learning Session provided by the AsTech Team as well as additional AAC Implementation Coaching with Dr. Daphney Denerville-Davis. AsTech team members coordinate with IEP team members to schedule as needed trainings at schools as well as inform them of Parent Resource Center (PRC) events and ongoing online professional development opportunities.
Who can I contact if I have questions or concerns about the device my child is using?
Training is extended to families with students with devices. If you have any questions about the device your child is using, please contact your IEP case carrier first. If necessary, the AsTech specialist will be contacted to help address the concerns or contact the manufacturer.
Can the student take the device home?
A device can be taken home if the student requires the device at home to support his/her IEP goals and/or accommodations. Parents or guardians are required to sign an Equipment Loan Agreement Form and participate in training prior to the device being sent home.
