July Schedule of Board Meetings, Work Sessions, and Advisory Council and Committee Meetings

The Arlington School Board’s July schedule of Board Meetings, Work Sessions, and Advisory Council and Committee Meetings is now available. This schedule is subject to change with advance notice provided on the APS website. For more information, contact the School Board Office at 703-228-6015.

During in-person meetings, the Board will comply with health and safety guidelines. At this time, masks are optional while indoors.

July School Board Meetings

• For the month of July, Public Comment on Agenda and Non-Agenda items will be limited to 30 minutes.
• The online speaker form will be posted four business days before the Board meeting and remain open until 4 p.m. the day before the meeting.
• The Board will hear from a maximum of 15 speakers, and each speaker will have up to 2 minutes to comment.
  • 10 slots will be reserved for speakers to sign up online in advance.
    • Email confirmations will be sent to speakers 24 hours before the Board meeting.
    • Speakers will have the option to select to speak in person or use the call-in service.
  • 5 slots will be reserved for speakers to sign up onsite between 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. before the School Board meeting.  School Board meetings begin at 7 p.m.  For the July 6 Organizational/School Board meeting, onsite sign-ups will be accepted between 9:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. before the Board meeting begins at 10:30 a.m.
• No speaker forms will be accepted before 6:15 p.m. or after 6:45 p.m. For the July 6 Organizational/School Board meeting, no speaker forms will be accepted before 9:45 a.m. or after 10:15 a.m.  No exceptions.
• Speaker forms will be available outside the Board room. Completed forms must be returned to the Deputy Clerk.
• Sign-ups on someone else’s behalf are not permitted.
• A lottery process will be used to select speakers if more requests than available slots are received.
• Speakers will be heard in the order their sign-up form was received; however, students will be heard first, regardless of their sign-up order.
• Agendas and background information are posted one week prior to the Board Meeting on BoardDocs.

School Board Work Sessions
For the 2023-24 school year, the School Board is introducing a new format for all work session meetings.  The School Board regularly holds work sessions for staff to brief the Board on specific topics and engage in-depth dialogue. Work sessions are open to the public, but no public comments are accepted.

This year, the School Board will hold work sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. once per quarter. During work session days, multiple work sessions will be scheduled covering different topics. The School Board will hold evening work sessions when advisory committees are invited or if there is a need to add a meeting to the calendar. This change is being made after consideration of various factors, which include operational efficiency and the alignment of topics and obligations for staff. By implementing this new meeting format, the School Board hopes to design a sustainable and practical meeting calendar. All work sessions occur on the second floor in the Board Room of the Syphax Education Center, 2110 Washington Blvd. In addition, all work sessions are live-streamed and can be viewed any time after the meeting by visiting the School Board Work Sessions webpage.

There are no Open Office Hours during the summer.  The 2023-24 school year schedule will be posted at the end of August.

School Board Advisory Councils and Committees
The School Board seeks the advice of community members through a wide range of advisory committees and councils. These advisory committees and councils are appointed by the School Board to advise the Board and, when appropriate, make recommendations on issues or policies related to the successful operation of the school system.
