The APS Physical Education program follows the Virginia Family Life Education (FLE) Standards of Learning (SOLs). Arlington Public Schools, in accordance with the State of Virginia mandate, has developed a comprehensive, sequential, age-appropriate K-10 Family Life Education curriculum. If parents/guardians would like to view a complete copy of all printed family life education program materials not subject to copyright protection and a description of all family life education program audio-visual materials, they can contact their child’s teacher or Chris Willmore, Supervisor for Health, PE, Drivers Ed, and Athletics, for access. The Family Life Education program will assist students to:
- Develop positive self-concepts and respect for others,
- Form and maintain strong relationships with family and community,
- Develop self-esteem, self-confidence, and responsibility,
- Understand the importance of abstaining from sexual activity,
- Manage stress and resist peer pressure,
- Develop awareness and knowledge of mental health issues,
- Prevent sexual assault and dating violence and recognize abusive relationships, and
- Develop into responsible, productive and well-adjusted adults
Transferring to Menstruation Instruction
Per HB 1221, the legislation permits school divisions to provide instruction on menstruation in health education. In this video, APS outlines the process and explains the transition of instruction from family life to health education. If there are any questions, please contact your child’s health and physical education teacher or the supervisor for Health, PE, Drivers Education, and Athletics.
